David Childs (born September 1933 in Bolton, Lancashire, England) is a Professor Emeritus in Politics at the University of Nottingham. His considerable contribution to the advancement of German studies has helped academics, ambassadors, business leaders, government ministers, the armed services and students develop a greater knowledge of the history and politics of Germany (former East - GDR, & West - FRG).
==Family and education==
Born in Bolton, David Childs is the son of John Arthur Childs, a police officer, who went on to become Mayor of Bolton (1962–63), and Ellen Childs (née Haslam). He has one sister, Margaret, who still lives in Bolton. He was educated at:
* Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton, Lancashire, UK
* Wigan & District Mining & Technical College, Lancashire, UK
* London School of Economics (LSE), (BSc), London, UK (1953–56)
* British Council Scholarship to the University of Hamburg, Germany (1956–57)
* University of London, (PhD), London, UK (1962)
